A Festival's 57th Anniversary

In 1969, Ken Bray was a jewelry vendor at Woodstock . On August 9, the silversmith returns to Bethel Woods. He will be at the Bethel Woods Center For The Arts for two events: a golf cart tour. which costs $19.69 (like the year of the festival) and a free symposium at 3 p.m. Another special discussion, which is free but requires an RSVP, boasts Henry Diltz and Bob Gruen , on stage together for the first time. It runs from 6-8 p.m. on the 11th of August. The photographers, who were at Woodstock , are to be interviewed by music journalist Rona Elliot . Bob wrote on Instagram that he was a young, happy camper while Henry was the official photographer.  It's all part of Anniversary Week at the museum in Bethel, New York, marking 57 years since Woodstock . There are several related exhibitions as well.

Pop Art Birthday Bash

On this day in 1928, Andy Warhol was born. A gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, will celebrate tomorrow night.  The man who came up with the idea for the Warhol Birthday & Pop Art Party 4.0 is Luke Heath , a pop artist himself.  As the name suggests, this is the fourth time the Floridarama Gallery is hosting the event.  Over thirty artists (Luke among them) are participating, and the exhibit will be up through the end of the month. Friday's event features interactive Warhol-inspired screen tests, live music and art demonstrations, and immersive installations. It is free to attend.

''Inside Job''

A picture of a disco ball in a desert; a ring shaped like a flower; a ''crying'' mask; an installation of milk crates; and psychedelic paintings . . . just a sample of Inside Job , Christie's Staff Art Auction. The online sale starts tomorrow and runs through the 19th of August. It features art created by talented employees at Christie's New York headquarters. They include photographers, administrators, and specialists. With estimates starting at a hundred dollars, the auction is an opportunity for seasoned collectors and those just starting out. Pieces will be on view at the Rockefeller Center galleries from the 14th through the 18th of the month.  The buyer's premium from this sale will be donated to Publicolor , a nonprofit which harnesses the power of art and design to engage students in revitalizing education programs and community spaces.

Special Announcements

The Art and Music Guide is now four years old! Also making news--a Jimi Hendrix book due on the fourth of August, and an upcoming auction to benefit disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Michigan. The Hendrix book is called Experienced and was written by the star's former road manager, Eric Barrett . Eric, who was at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight with Jimi, has also toured with Madonna, David Bowie , and George Michael .  As for the auction, all proceeds go to the Marshall Mathers Foundation. Eminem (whose real name is Marshall Mathers ) is selling over a hundred pairs of signed sneakers from his personal collection on the 25th of August. You can check them out or register to bid here: https://www. juliensauctions.com/en/ auctions/marshall-mathers- foundation-auction .

''Unlovable'' Exhibition

Next month, the Vision Gallery in Chandler, Arizona, is hosting a couple of Make and Take events. On August 8, people can create pet snakes out of pipe cleaners, beads, and other materials. And on the 22nd, they can opt for bugs. The activities are related to the Unlovable exhibit, running through August 15. Over sixty Arizona-based artists submitted paintings, sculptures, and other pieces depicting creatures deemed 'unlovable' by the public. The subjects range from arachnoids to marsupials, and much of the art is charming rather than repulsive or scary. In June, the gallery hosted a Creepy Crawler Day with bug and animal crafts as well as live exhibits from the Phoenix Zoo .

Shatner to Play Illinois Music Festival

A 95-year-old actor is making his live debut with his new metal band in September. William Shatner will play Chicago's Riot Fest   on the 20th of September, along with The *uckers .  He provided a list of tongue-in-cheek requests for concert organizers as well as the city of Chicago. These range from providing fire breathers for his performance to being allowed to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame at a local baseball game.   Incidentally, Shatner has released quite a few albums over the years, even collaborating with Ben Folds in 2004 and for a 2018 Christmas LP, attracting guests like Elliot Easton, Todd Rundgren, Ian Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Judy Collins , and Iggy Pop. The latter will also be at Douglass Park . Morrissey , the Sex Pistols, Alanis Morissette , and Twenty One Pilots are among others appearing at the three-day festival (September 18, 19, and 20).

''Front Row Experiences''

Little Face Art

On the Fourth of July, there were all sorts of celebrations. One artist even imagined a moose, bunny, dog, and other creatures joining in.  Sharon Brotz , whose online gallery is called  Little Face Art , has been writing and illustrating children's stories for many years (although her work also appeals to adults). She told the Art and Music Guide that she always has had an optimistic view of the world where everyone gets along (people and animals).  ''I paint in a naive and whimsical style with the hope of having those who look at my paintings smile.'' So her pieces have included a camera-ready koala, a flute-playing panda, a snowman welcoming the signs of spring, a pair of lovestruck penguins for Valentine's Day and a woodpecker peeking out of a tree. The artist even came up with a different version of a ferris wheel--called Ferrets' Wheel .   Sharon, who also creates images of flowers, said she is influenced by impressionist painters ''but with ...

The Punk Ethos

Punk does not just pertain to music. According to authors Chris Sullivan and Stephen Colegrave , it is having  a do-it-your attitude, being creative, and rejecting authority. So Andy Warhol is a prime example, bringing consumer culture to galleries and directing a five-hour film of his sleeping boyfriend.  Colegrave and Sullivan's Punk-The-Last-Word (their precursor being Punk: A Life Apart in 2001, for which they interviewed musicians, managers, promoters, designers, and others) also says Warhol was a visionary. He foresaw artists like Banksy , selling the same picture in different colors, and perhaps even Instagram and TikTok with all of their selfies.  Even one of Andy's 'superstars' influenced punk's early look, with her close-cut hairdo, all-black attire, and dark eyeliner. Besides that, Edie Sedgwick had a unique way of dancing. It was kind of Egyptian with her head tilting in just the right way, according to Warhol himself. There was dancing--with w...

Hollywood Vampires On The Road

It has been quite a while since the Hollywood-Vampires have been in the news.  So fans will be happy that their 2018 performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival is being released (digitally next month; on CD and vinyl this fall). It includes covers of David Bowie 's Heroes and Motorhead ' s Ace Of Spades .  Now online is their performance of Raise the Dead from the aforementioned festival. The supergroup, consisting of Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Johnny Depp , and Tommy Henriksen , is also going on tour.  The first concert, on the 12th of August, is set for London's O2 arena. Other cities on the itinerary include Glasgow, Paris, Hamburg, and Budapest.

Birmingham's Salute to Ozzy

Ozzy Osbourne 's iconic throne is now on display at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery .  The free UK exhibit, titled Working-Class-Hero , runs through the 27th of September. It was extended because of public demand.  The throne, originally built for the star's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2024, was also used for Ozzy's final performance last summer with Black Sabbath in Birmingham. And it's not the only piece of memorabilia for visitors to check out. Also on view are the singer's gold and platinum records, MTV and Grammy awards, photographs, and tributes from fans. No booking is required. In addition, the museum has been offering related activities. They include a workshop on Sunday, in which people can create their own interpretations of Ozzy's famous cross pendant with recycled materials. Incidentally, a free photo exhibit from the aforementioned concert has just opened at Bullring (Grand Central) in Birmingham: Back to the Beginning ....

Another Side of Tony Danza

Tony Danza is known for starring in TV's Taxi and Who's The Boss . But he is also a musician. In fact, the entertainer has a new show which pays homage to Frank Sinatra (with whom the actor was well acquainted). In February, he brought Tony Danza: Sinatra & Stories to 54 Below in New York City. He returns tonight, as well as July 2-3 and July 23-25, accompanied by his four-piece band and  his ukulele.    The 75-year-old has another show, which is called  Standards & Stories . Here he performs some of his favorite Great American Songbook selections and interweaves stories about his life and personal connection to the music.  The next Standards & Stories is set for Doc-s-Jazz-Club in Houston, Texas, on the 30th of July.

Crafts For Cats

Annika Hinds thinks her family helped fuel her creativity. If a new table, shed, doghouse or treehouse was needed, they built it themselves.  So when Annika adopted a kitten, she avoided overpriced stores and made Figgy 's toys and accessories herself--even a jungle gym and miniature cabin! The results appear in Chronicle Books ' Crafting For Your Cat .  Each craft is rated with a paw system which indicates the degree of difficulty. So five paws represent more challenges. The DIY guide is also fun for those who aren't handy. It's full of appealing photos with 'models'--including Figgy --posing with Annika's creations.  A couple of scratching posts, shaped like a giant strawberry and mushroom, resemble pop art. Other colorful projects include a crescent moon hammock, crochet bandana, floral tent, and sparkling name tag. There's even a tea party plate. It sounds elegant and complicated, but gets just one paw: All one needs to do is glue a saucer on top o...

''The Man With The Golden Ear''

The Art And Music Guide was sorry to learn about the passing of Clive Davis . The record executive and producer, known for his ''golden ear,'' was 94 years old.  Clive was with Columbia Records before he started Arista.  This was where he signed up acts like Aretha F ranklin, Barry Manilow, and Patti Smith .  In 2000, he founded J Records , credited with the success of Alicia Keys and Maroon 5 . Clive, who also worked with Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana and Aerosmith , hosted an annual Grammy Week bash which Variety called ''the music business' most coveted social ducat.''

A Chronicle of ''Nature's Wildest Weather''

We've all heard of photogenic people, but tornadoes? Storm chaser and author Hank-Schyma thinks they can be, although he is particularly fond of lightning. There are loads of such images in his book, Storm: Chasing Nature's Wildest Weather . There's even lightning-related phenomena: The most common, he says, are sprites. which often resemble jellyfish. They are among the book's best shots. So it's disappointing to learn that light-sensitive cameras are responsible, as sprites aren't too bright close up. When it comes to hail, Hank isn't eager to get up close--though they come in all sorts of odd shapes (even resembling the human heart in one depiction). He explains that storm chasers are not concerned so much about getting hurt. It is more about losing a vehicle window, then being forced off the road while trying to find another one. Hank has had his fill of hurricanes, though. After capturing damage from Ike , which made landfall not far from his home in ...

Farley Post Office Building in New York City. To purchase, click on https://store.usps.com/ store/home , and to lear...

Fort Wayne's Summer Concert Series

It's not officially summer yet. But the 2026 Foellinger-Theatre summer concert series kicked off last night in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with the Fort Wayne Community Band . This was a free show--unlike national names like Kansas and 38 Special (scheduled for July 10), Three Dog Night (July 17) and UB40 (October 4). Another noteworthy headliner will be the Little River Band , once considered ''the best singing band in the world'' by the Eagles ' Glenn Frey . They are to be supported, on June 12, by Seals and Crofts 2 . The new project, which honors the popular seventies duo, features Brady Seals , cousin of original member Jim Seals , and Lua Crofts , daughter of Dash Crofts .  David Lee Roth was to appear tomorrow night with Eagles of Death Metal . However, Roth's performance has been cancelled, due to ''unforeseen circumstances.''  Major upgrades to the venue were completed last year, including enhanced stage and house lighting, and ...

The Irsay Collection Series

Christie's will soon be offering rare artifacts once owned by Jim Irsay, the late owner of the Indianapolis Colts .  It is the next installment in The Jim Irsay Collection Series , with the first four happening in March of this year.  This time around, the sale will include goods ranging from a painted eagle regimental drum to Harry Truman 's Inauguration Day top hat. There are also posters and pennants from key elections and historic moments as well as autographed photos and other items pertaining to figures as diverse as Harry Houdini and Susan B. Anthony .  The live auction, which is a celebration of America 250 , will held on the first of July at Christie's New York (20 Rockefeller Center). Prior to that, a free public exhibition will be held at the same location. Some proceeds will be donated to causes supported by Irsay. Among them was the Kicking the Stigma campaign, launched by Jim and his daughters in 2020 to raise awareness and expand treatment and resear...

July Jamboree

The Truckers Jamboree in Walcott, Iowa, began in 1979 with a handful of exhibits, live music, and food. A few hundred drivers attended.  Last year, the event attracted as many as 46,000 visitors. And there were over 175 displays. A highlight of the next jamboree, running from July 9-11, will be the Super Truck Beauty Contest . Some will compete for best Custom Paint Design and Custom Vinyl Design , while all entries are considered for Trucker's Choice, Polish & Detail Work , and Best Overall Theme .  The concerts are a big draw, too. Among those taking the stage will be the Schmidt Brothers , whose repertoire includes songs from the likes of Motley Crue and Britney Spears , as well as Nate and Amber Butler , the husband and wife duo at the heart of Shiny Shiny Black . Amber told the Guide that their venues have included coffee shops and small clubs, which is why they've been called ''coffeehouse rock'' artists.  Admission is free of charge. That's a...

Edible Collectibles

Oreo has collaborated with famous fans like Lady Gaga, Post Malone , and Selena Gomez . Now the company has teamed up with BTS . The new treats are inspired by hotteok, a brown sugar-stuffed pancake popular in Korean street food markets.   Mondelez , Oreo 's parent company, says that on the first of June, the snacks can be purchased online, and in stores a week later. Besides purple wafers--a nod to the band's signature color--there are 13 embossments created by BTS to celebrate their 13th anniversary. Designs include member names and the group's finger heart symbol. The cookies will be available in over 80 markets around the world. This makes it the brand's biggest partnership to date.
