Lighthouse Celebrations

Today is National Lighthouse Day, which has inspired a slew of activities.

Quite a few lighthouses are offering tours. That's the case in Key Biscayne, Florida. But a virtual tour is available for those who would like to explore but not climb to the top.

This evening, visitors are also invited to draw or paint their own images--and can even create lighthouse hats. 


And there are museums which are devoted to the beautiful structures. Among them is the Watch Hill in Westerly, Rhode Island, where one can learn about the lives of the lighthouse keepers and view historical documents and photographs.

Christie's  has announced that one of  Ed Ruscha 's best known works will lead the  20th Century Evening Sale  during Fall Marquee Week next month. It is called  Standard Station, Ten-Cent Western   Being Torn in Half , and could go for as much as $50 million. The artist first encountered the  Standard Oil  gas stations during a road trip from his native Oklahoma to California in 1962. A Big Day For Record Collectors

The unofficial start of the shopping season is Black Friday--the day after Thanksgiving. This year, it falls on the 29th of November. With that in mind, those looking for music have lots of choices at  Record Store Day Black Friday . For the first time on vinyl, for instance,  Dark Horse Records  reissues  Leon Russell 's 1995  Hymns of Christmas . The instrumental album features orchestral arrangements and Leon's piano playing. Among the ten tracks are  Silent Night  and  Joy To The World . Another offering is  The Doors: Live in Detroit , from their May 8, 1970 performance at the  Cobo Arena . It's the first time the set is available on 4-LP vinyl. Part of the band's  Roadhouse Blues  tour, it was one of their longer shows. Zurich Art Weekend

The 8th edition of   Zurich Art Weekend   runs from Friday, the 13th of June, through Sunday, the 15th of the month.  It's a free celebration offering events like guided tours with curators, late-night gallery openings, panel discussions, DJ sets, and book launches. There are over 70 exhibitions and at least 150 events. Nearly two hundred established and emerging artists are represented.  One of the most noteworthy exhibits is being held at  Galerie Gmurzynska , and continues through the end of September. It features  Andy Warhol' s collaboration with his assistant/painter  Ronnie Cutrone,  known for his cartoon characters. The poster depicts Warhol's  Brillo  box and soup can along with Cutrone's  Felix the Cat .
