Night People in New York

Mark Ronson is a producer, songwriter, and disc jockey who has worked with Bruno Mars, Adele, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Lady Gaga

He was interested in music from the get-go, thanks in part to his stepfather who taught him some studio techniques. That was Foreigner's Mick Jones. And one of his best friends was Sean Lennon.

So it's no surprise to see plenty of other boldface names in Mark's memoir, Night People: How to be a DJ in '90s New York City. They include clubgoers ranging from Jay-Z to Martha Stewart

And the 50-year-old shares stories about the establishments themselves. One was the Limelight, a church turned nightclub, owned by Peter Gatien. But he got one of his first jobs from his neighbor Amanda--Peter's daughter who threw parties at another Gatien hot spot called Club USA

The author admits it wasn't all fun and games. He was afraid of heights. He faced his fears when he climbed into a booth similar to ''an overpass above the Long Island Expressway.'' As for getting high - on drugs - this was not always a good idea, especially when Mark wasn't always sure what he was taking.

Fights sometimes broke out without warning, but the incidents are glossed over. The DJ was more concerned about the enforcement of the Cabaret Law, which prohibited dancing in New York venues without a license.

Mark wanted to write the book before his memories faded. Others agree with his decision: Besides making the New York Times Best Seller list, there are plans to make Night People into a movie.

There's no word yet on casting, but this is likely to include an actress playing Samantha Ronson. Having watched her brother plenty of times, she ''knew what to do,'' and also became a DJ.
