The Culture of Fire Island

The first book about Fire Island's rich artistic history was published last month.

Andy Warhol, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Paul Thek, and David Hockney are a few of the creatives featured in Fire Island Art: 100 Years.

The editor is John Dempsey, an island history expert and president of the Fire Island Pines Society. He told Out magazine: ''You have some of New York's most creative people gathered in a place of extraordinary natural beauty.'' 

John will offer more of his thoughts at Manhattan's Rizzoli Bookstore on the second of June. 

Joining him will be writer and filmmaker Michael Bullock, whose essay, Fire Island's Art Renaissance, 2010 to Present, appears in the collection.

Hippie Fest

Hippie Fest  is a music and arts festival for all ages. While not the same everywhere, attendees can generally expect to see bohemian vendor booths, tribute bands, drum circles, tie-dye activities, and a vintage car show.   The latter is to open all vehicles which fit the hippie theme. Categories include Most Artistic, Grooviest Paint Job, Best Photo-Op, and Most Psychedelic. The next festival will be held in Tipton, Indiana, on September 27 and 28. The  Seth Brown Duo  (Seth and his wife, Desiree) will be among the entertainers. Ronnie's Retrospective

In June,  Ronnie Wood  (who is included in the last edition of the  Art   and Music Guide ) celebrated half a century with the  Rolling Stones . Along the way, he has released seven solo studio albums. So it's an ideal time to look back. That will happen next month with the release of  Fearless: Anthology 1965-2025.  The collection begins with Ronnie's first bands as a teenager and highlights his work with  Jeff Beck , the  Faces , and, of course, the  Stones .  Some songs written by Ronnie,  Mick Jagger ,  and  Keith Richards  are featured here. In addition, the performer has come out with a couple of new tunes.    Fearless  is due on the 26th of September. 40 Years On

Slash  is best known for his  Guns N' Roses  contributions. Yet he nearly wound up with  Poison . After a successful audition, he was called back twice. But  CC DeVille  got the job because of his high hairdo and heels. That's according to  Martin Popoff 's celebration of the Gunners' 40th anniversary.  Another interesting part of  Guns N Roses at 40  concerns  Arnold   Schwarzeneg ger .  You Could Be Mine  was used in  Terminator 2:   Judgment Day  after Arnold invited the band over for dinner to ''seal the deal.''  It is surprising that  Stephanie Seymour  isn't mentioned once.
