''The Life and Line of Keith Haring''

Brad Gooch  is a poet, novelist, and biographer who has written about  Flannery O'Connor   and   Frank O'Hara . His latest book, though, is about  Keith Haring . It turns out that a main inspiration was the artist's father, who offered encouragement and drew with him. Later on, Keith's resentment built up, and he felt both his dad and mother were too controlling. There was a similar problem in some of the young man's art classes since he didn't like being told what to draw. But it wasn't long before teachers backed off, appreciating his ambition and talent. Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring  is about other creatives as well. Keith was friends with   Kenny Scharf , who used to work with discarded television sets. In fact, he helped Kenny drag a bunch of them across town. Other pals were  Jean-Michel Basquiat , who liked to write on the walls of Keith's art school, and  Tseng Kwong Ch i , who documented much of Haring's work. That included su

A Controversial Chip Shop Mural

The owner of a chip shop in south-east London is fighting to keep a mural up on his wall. It depicts a fish with a hat, waving a  Union Jack   flag, beside a bucket of fries.  Chris Kanizi , who runs the  Golden Chippy , is fond of the art, as are many residents. One woman pointed out that if it was a   Banksy , no one would complain. Other locals contacted Greenwich Council, claiming it's is in a ''conservation area'' and was painted without permission.  Chris is puzzled by the controversy, and points out that this has become a popular place for international visitors to take selfies.

Rock And Pop Stars' Widows Share Their Stories

The stories of rockers gone too soon is all too familiar, and the cause is often linked to drugs or accidents. A new book is asking what became of the stars' widows. The author of  I Can't Remember If I Cried  (she also lost her husband),  Lori   Tucker-Sullivan , considers this to be part music history, part memoir.  Crystal Zevon , who wrote her own book about life with  Warren , is among the interviewees. Others include  Sandy Chapin , who was married to  Harry , and  Scott   Weiland ' s widow  Jamie .  The book is out in May.  Meanwhile,  facebook.com/The- Rock-Widows-Project  has more.

Patti Boyd's Auction

Through the 21st of March,  Christie's  is holding an  online auction  of  Patti Boyd 's memorabilia.  The photographer and model was married to  George Harrison , and then wed his friend  Eric Clapton . She was also a muse, with George penning songs like  I Need You  and  Something  and the latter composing  Layla  and  Wonderful Tonight .  So the musicians are featured in a number of photos. Unexpected images include Eric with a parrot on his shoulder, and George, who looks rather uncomfortable as he takes a ferry ride to the Isle of Skye.  Artwork includes a handmade Christmas card to Patti from George, and Eric's line drawings of conductors. Other lots consist of Patti's jewelry--most notably a ruby, sapphire, diamond, and enamel pendant received from Clapton--and some clothing. One of the items being most talked about is the love letter Eric wrote Patti while she was still married.  It is estimated to go for between GBP 10,000 to GBP 15,000.

One Hundred Feet Below Sea Level

Campina de Cima   is a rock salt mine beneath the city Loule in Portugal--not the sort of place one would expect to see artwork. But it now stages temporary exhibitions, and the first one's called  Ocean: Sea is Life .  The artists are from the  David Melguerio Association , which campaigns for ocean clean-ups. The show, which runs through the end of April, is dedicated to   Saint Barbara , the patron saint of miners. Another option is to take a tour and learn about the history of the mine itself. Daltrey's Milestones

Yesterday  Roger Daltrey  turned 80. He celebrated with  Roger's Pale   Ale , which the  Lakedown Brewing  company created for him. ''What better way to celebrate your birthday than having your own beer made by your family brewery?'' the singer wrote. Indeed the business was launched by Roger's son,  Jamie , along with two sons-in-law.  The drink will not be available to the public.  However, concert tickets are. . . . Shortly after Roger announced he was stepping down as   Teenage Trust Charity ' s curator (though he'll continue to be an Honorary Patron), a series of shows were announced in London, England. Entertainers during the weeklong series range from  Squeeze  to  Robert Plant   ( The Who , too) and they are marking 24 years since the  Teenage Cancer Trust  was founded. There's even a night of comedy, on March 19th. The events run from the 18th through the 25th of March a t  Royal Albert Hal l .  It is an appropriate venue, seeing that Daltre
