Tony's book,  Up and Down With the Rolling Stones , was published in 1979.  Charlie Daniels , who died earlier this year, was a photographer whose subjects included the  Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix , and  Peter Wolf . However, an enormous amount of his work remained unseen, sitting in over three thousand roles on undeveloped film in his Boston home.   Through the generosity of supporters and a grant from the  Somerville   Arts Council  in Massachusetts, a good deal has been ab

Carving in the Ozarks

Jimmy Hobbs was running Affordable Tree Service for over a decade before he decided to take up carving. The resident of Salinas, Texas, was inspired by chainsaw artists he saw on TV. He now creates sculptures of bears, owls, and other creatures, and also takes requests. He is to take part in the 18th annual Carving in the Ozarks festival in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in the spring. Attendees can watch as raw logs are transformed into works of art, and these will be auctioned off. Proceeds have been donated to national as well as local causes, with the Eureka Springs Fire Department and Habitat For Humanity among them. Carvers come from around the country to show off their skills and to compete for cash prizes. Shells in The Arts

Picking up seashells, beachgoers aren't likely to be thinking about the objects' role in the arts.  That was one of Fabio Moretzsohn 's subjects. A book by the author and professor, who died in 2020, was published last year.  Shells: A Natural And Cultural History  observes that even  Rembrandt   produced an illustration of an exoskeleton. Better known is  Sandro Botticelli ' s  The Birth of Venus , with its large scallop shell. Other depictions have appeared on banknotes and postage stamps. The items themselves have used to make everything from jewelry to trumpets, and have adorned picture frames and clothing. If all of this weren't enough, shells have been mentioned in songs. One was on a 1974 hit album-- Supertramp 's  Crime of the Century . Its title was Hide in  Your Shell .
