''Cone of Shame'' Gets a Makeover

After dogs have surgery, they often have to wear a   Cone of Shame --the title of various exhibits and a new book by photographer   Winnie   Au . These pictures, though, depict works of art. In one instance, designer  Marie-Yan Morvan  made a multicolored necklace of sponges. In others, the texture and color of her creations are a perfect match for the subjects. Such is the case with a Bedlington terrier, wearing wool pom poms. Other materials include eggshells, coffee filters, faux fur, silk flowers, and aluminum foil.  Au's own pet, a basset hound, is included in the book.

A Grocery's Hidden Art Gems

The Art of Trader Joe's  is a new book by a 2022 Yale graduate. It draws on her award-winning thesis, which saw the chain as a ''cabinet of contemporary curiosities.'' The author,  Julie Averbach , addressed inquiries from  Cheryl's Art and Music Guide . . . . AAMG: Do you believe the company's use of art is deliberate? JA: I do. The founder,  Joe Coulombe,  envisioned  Trader Joe's  as a grocery store that would have a cultural and intellectual appeal. AAMG: So what comes to mind? Their newsletters and feta cheese containers? JA: Certainly their feta cheese products reference Ionic columns and ancient Greek architecture. Meanwhile, the newsletter includes quirky black and white Victorian illustrations. These pictures not only look vintage, but actually derive from the late 19th century in many cases. The book traces the secret and surprising origins of these works. For example, it traces a Victorian cartoon on  Trader Joe's  paper towels ba...

Maine Masterworks

A New York auction is expected to raise at least three million dollars.  The 20 paintings, being sold today, were created by members of the  Wyeth  family (spanning three generations), according to a  Bonhams press release . These belonged to the late  Linda Bean , granddaughter of the founder of the outdoor clothing empire,  L.L. Bean .  Linda was a devoted patron of the arts. She was particularly interested in artists from her native Maine, such as the  Wyeth  family dynasty. Her favorite was a Port Clyde coastal scene, painted by  N.C. Wyeth .  Also part of the auction is a  Norman Rockwell  piece. It wasn't Linda's, but a collector who has chosen to remain anonymous.  Like the  Wyeth  pictures,  A Scout is Loyal  could fetch millions of dollars.

''Jeff Beck: The Guitar Collection''

News About Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys  is the subject of a new exhibit in Los Angeles.  From November 16-March 23,  The Broad  is presenting over 400 artworks illuminating the late artist's role as an environmental advocate. Iconic works such as  Sled  and  Felt Suit  join lesser known multiples like  Rhine Water (Polluted) .  Admission to In Defense of Nature is free, but it is recommended that visitors request timed-entry tickets to avoid long lines. Incidentally, Beuys is mentioned in a new book by gallerist  Michael   Findlay . In  Portrait of the Art Dealer as a Young Man , the author recalls his contribution to Joseph's  I Like America and America Likes Me . This 1974 project saw the avant-garde sculptor spending three days inside a gallery with a coyote. Many thought he put himself at risk, but the animal was used to humans.  The writer explains that the coyote came from a New Jersey farm. Michael rented the animal for a $30...

California Airport Art

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)  has unveiled a new art installation. This is located on the Departures Level in Terminal 4's concourse, and is part of Terminal 4's renovations. The brightly colored mural features a starburst pattern, and was created by  Allison Kunath .  Allison's staccato brushwork marks bring to mind the comings and goings of airport visitors. The piece is called Everyday Transcendence . Check out  flylax.com/art-program  for more about the painting, and  LAX 's art program.

''New York After Dark'' Review

Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha are brothers who run MAO Public Relations , a fashion PR and events production company. They are authors, too, and their latest is Dustin Pittman: New York After Dark .  While the focus is primarily on city nightlife in the seventies and eighties, some jobs were done earlier in the day, and there's also a handful of Paris fashion shoots.  The venues range from The Mudd Club to the Metropolitan Museum of Art , with subjects such as David Johansen (who penned the foreword); Bryan Ferry; Debbie Harry; Iggy Pop; Madonna (pre-fame); Bianca Jagger ; and Calvin Klein . And there are quite a few identified guests.  That's the case with a sampling of Dustin's Woodstock festival photos--and a disappointment with no headliners. Yet the photographer claims he got to see Jimi Hendrix up close.  Regardless of who he's working with, the former WWD employee thinks love tends to be his theme, with various couples embracing (even one 'tro...
