Next Week's Sound And Cinema Sale

On the 24th of November,  Bonhams '  Sound & Cinema Sale  will be held. It's led by furnishings, clothing, paintings, and even a typewriter, previously owned by  Marianne Faithfull .  Two lots offer a more personal side. #3 contains a portion of the performer's diaries as well as lyrics, while No. 9 consists of correspondence with her father, first husband  John Dunbar , artist  Martin Sharp , and singer  Gene Pitney . Also included are letters Marianne wrote to  Yoko Ono  and  Damon Albarn , as well as an invitation to a reception from the  Queen .  The auction offers some property from the late  Beatles  press officer,  Derek Taylor  as well. Among the items are a postcard from John and Yoko, and Derek's peacock chair. The ''peacock,'' incidentally, got the name from its fanned out back, not because of its color.  More musical options include  John Entwistle 's bass guitar and...

Glowing in San Francisco

Let's Glow  is America's largest projection event, and the San Francisco iteration will feature 19 artists from around the globe. One is  Jacob Stephens , who turns the buildings into gingerbread houses with his projections. It's meant to create a sense of warmth. On the other hand, quite a few of the participants have been inspired by winter, so will offer frosty illusions. There are even half a dozen interactive icebergs which play music. Another attraction is called  Electric Dandelions . These giant steel and acrylic sculptures look like flowers during the day. However, as the sun sets, they transform into an ever-changing fireworks display. The shows, from 5:30-10:00 p.m., run from December 5-14.  Visit  LET’S GLOW SF   for details.

''Rock & Soul''

Ballast Books  recently released a portion of photographer  Barry   Morgenstein 's portfolio.  Part memoir and part visual time capsule,  Rock & Soul  features names ranging from  Peter Frampton  to  B.B. King . When he was young, Barry wanted to be  Jimmy Page . Since that job was taken, he learned to ''work a camera'' and photographed the  Led   Zeppelin  icon instead! In fact, Jimmy and his former bandmate, Robert Plant , are featured in a collection of T-shirts being sold at  https://www. barrymorgenstein.com/rock-n- roll-store . Others include  Elton John, Debbie Harry, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Angus Young,  and  Peter Gabriel .  Barry's book launch is tomorrow at  WHINO  in Arlington, Virginia. There will also be a gallery of images. Food and beverages are available to purchase from the restaurant. Admission to the event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is free, but RSVP is required....

The Art And Fashion of Bob Mackie

Last month,  Sabrina Carpenter  made her  Grand Ole Opry  debut in a one shoulder dress designed by  Bob Mackie . It was originally created for  Ann-Margret  in the 1970s, and is soon to be auctioned off. So will an eighties number, worn by  Pink  in 2024, which featured a leopard design and ostrich plume skirt.  These are part of the  Juliens Bold Luxury Auction , which is accepting bids ahead of the big event on the third of December. Other offerings include a green jumpsuit worn by  Cher  on her old TV show with  Sonny Bono ; a bodysuit with lame gold wings created for  Tina Turner ; and  Carol Burnett 's beaded gown (from when the comic appeared at the  Metropolitan Opera  with  Beverly Sills ).  Bob's fashion illustrations--and even paintings--are included as well.  Cher, Diana Ross , and  Marilyn Monroe  are depicted in the latter. Bob did the original sketch of Maril...

Icons in Levi's

San Francisco's  The Vault  has an exhibit that is sure to appeal to fans of denim clothes and contemporary music. It is called  Amped: Music Icons in Levi's Denim . And indeed, the company's jeans have been worn during music festivals, award ceremonies, and other key events.  Levi Strauss And Company  historian  Tracey Panek  told the  Guide : ''The show features musicians from the sixties and early seventies like  John Sebastian/Lovin' Spoonful  to country music star  Orville Peck  today.'' There are only a couple of reproductions. Tracey says they were worn by  Britney Spears  and  Justin Timberlake , and points out that ''Britney auctioned her gown off, and we don't know where Justin's suit ended up.''  As for the original ensembles, these were worn by the likes of  Elton   John, Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury, Pharrell Williams , and  Beyonce. The exhibition is free to visit and i...

A Celebration For An Advertising Mascot

It will soon be the  Pillsbury Doughboy 's 60th birthday. This takes place on the 7th of November.  Corporate Archivist  Natasha Bruns  told the  Art and Music Guide  that he's stayed pretty consistent over time. Last year, however, there were some slight changes.  Poppin' Fresh --to use his official name--got thinner, longer legs, and his eyes now have more definition. In addition, the color of his tie changed, from white to blue.  The concept for the doughboy came from  Rudolph Perz , then the creative director at the  Leo Burnett  ad agency in Chicago. Perz envisioned him popping out of a can of refrigerated biscuit dough.  In 1988, a  Pillsbury  doughboy cookie jar was created. It just made a limited return, and has already sold out. But fans can also celebrate by visiting the character's home for the first time: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=oD02XflaBsk .
